Stretch marks

Also known as striae distensae, stretch marks are common skin marks usually associated with weight fluctuations or pregnancy. Although harmless, they can be considered unsightly.

What are stretch marks?

Also called striae distensae, stretch marks are generally related to weight gain or loss or pregnancy. Their colour ranges from pale pink to purple when they first form, then evolves into linear pearly white streaks. They develop along the lines of skin tension. The most affected areas are the legs (especially the knees and thighs), abdomen, and breasts.

Causes of stretch marks

Stretch marks are caused by rapid stretching of the skin, which weakens its internal structure. This leads to the breaking of collagen and elastin fibers, resulting in the appearance of fine lines similar to small tears. Sensitivity to this phenomenon varies from person to person. Some skin types, which are more fragile or genetically predisposed, are more prone to developing stretch marks.
