Pigmentation spots

Pigmentation spots are areas of skin discolouration, often visible on the face, neck, décolleté, and hands. Although common with age or after prolonged sun exposure, they can be considered unsightly.

What are pigmentation spots?

Pigmentation spots, or hyperpigmentation, are areas of skin where melanin is produced in excess, resulting in spots darker than the surrounding skin tone. They are also known as sun spots, age spots, lentigines, or freckles. While this phenomenon is often linked to skin aging, it can also appear in adulthood, especially on sun-exposed areas, such as the face, shoulders, backs of the hands, or décolleté.

Causes of pigmentation spots

The main cause of pigmentation spots is prolonged exposure to UV rays, which stimulates an overproduction of melanin. However, other factors can also be responsible, including hormonal imbalances (such as those related to pregnancy or unsuitable contraception), certain skin inflammations, natural aging, and genetic predispositions. These spots can appear on all skin tones and at different stages of life.
